Naturopathic Doctors Call For Real Health Care Reform

Today, 100 naturopathic doctors and supporters met on Capitol Hill to advocate for an overhaul of the nation’s healthcare system.

“The healthcare system must address the underlying factors that lead to chronic disease,” says Karen Howard, Executive Director of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. “Nearly 40% of all U.S. deaths are from heart disease, and more than two thirds of Americans are overweight. We need to move past this broken model and create a system that focuses on overall health, wellness and enabling the body’s natural healing process.”

This is the change we need. By empowering people to take charge of their health by incorporating more whole foods, exercise and stress reducing activities we can significantly lower the amount of money we spend on medications and operations.

This is exactly what Integrative Nutrition students are doing. Yes, we are a school, but we are also a movement. Students and graduates are out in their communities teaching men, women and children the importance of whole grains, fruits and vegetables as well as balancing other aspects their lives.

NuVal: Nutritional Scoring

There is so much confusion in the supermarket these days, so I’m thrilled to hear how the new Nuval system will work.  Nuval is a Nutritional Scoring System, designed by Dr. Katz ( Former Director of Public Health at Yale and Guest lecturer at Institute for Integrative Nutrition) to help consumers make educated choices in the market. The system was designed by an independent third party (having nothing to do with government, lobbyists, etc) to simply help consumers.

The NuVal™ System (put together by leading scientists and nutrition experts) considers more than 30 different nutrients and nutrition factors – and their impact on health outcomes – to determine a food’s Score, so it gives a robust and fair account of a food’s true nutritional value. The NuVal System scores food on a scale of 1 to 100. The higher the NuVal Score, the higher the nutrition. It’s that simple. 

Pepperidge Farm Classic Hot Dog Buns has a score of 10, while Nature’s Own 100% Whole Wheat Bread score 81. Quite a difference! Going back to our organic cereal comparison, Kashi Strawberry Fields scores an 11, while Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs scores a 91. 

While the system will be extremely helpful for consumers, there are some misleading bits of information. The system marks fat-free milk for example as having a score of 100, yet we know countless information that talks of the ill effects of dairy.

I’m Healthy, I Eat Organic

Recently I had a client come to me who couldn’t understand why she wasn’t losing weight.  She said “I eat so healthy, I eat everything Organic”.  Upon further investigation, I came to understand that the list of organic foods she ate was not limited to produce but things like organic cereal, organic cookies and organic milk.  cascadian-farms

There seems to be a misconception that organic=good for me.  While switching to organic groceries is definitely recommended in order to stay clear of toxins and chemicals, it is not a free pass to losing weight and good health.  Organic products still use sugar for example. It may be organic sugar but it still has the same effect on your body as conventional.  Take organic cereals for example.  There are several on the market, especially granola’s that are awfully high in sugar…about 16g per serving. If you are going to eat cereal, look for organic cereals that have no more then 6grams per serving.  Here are a few to try Cascadian Farms Purely O’s (1gram sugar/serving),  Barbara’s Bakery Puffins (5gram sugar/serving & wheat free), Nature’s Path Crispy Rice Cereal (2gram sugar/serving, gluten free)

Healthy Living

When most people think about losing weight they envision the ugly act of dieting. They envision all of their favorite foods being taken away from them. That doesn’t sound like very much fun! Most people find that dieting is not sustainable. They can do it for a month or two and lose a few pounds, but after a month they gain that weight back and sometimes more. What about a more sustainable way to lose weight, eat healthier and enjoy life?

Whenever you consider making changes in your life it’s always best to have a support system. Think about any major life decision: applying to college, getting married, etc. Did you consult with your friends and family about which college you wanted to go to or your future spouse? The same applies to healthy living. If you want to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and exercise more who can you ask in your life that will support you in making these changes? Maybe they also want to eat healthier and exercise more. Set intentions together and steps for how you’re going to reach those goals. Maybe you can start running together or cook healthy meals together.

Another helpful tip for eating better and losing weight is to start a journal. This doesn’t have to be a diary of what you eat every day, but rather how you feel. Have you noticed changes in your mood or energy level by exercising more or changing the foods you eat? This Integrative Nutrition Journal will help get you started.

When in Rome…

I just returned from celebrating my birthday in Napa and Sonoma- the food and wine mecca of the west. With the abundance of high quality produce, tasty wines and tantalizing desserts what’s a holistic nutrition counselor to do, but indulge her senses. When in Rome, right?! I live by the 90-10 rule. 90 percent of the time I eat well and 10 percent of the time I allow myself to indulge in what was once considered a “forbidden food”. dsc01327

I encourage my clients to adapt the same philosophy. One of the reasons diets don’t work is that they come from a place of deprivation. People think healthy eating means they have to suffer, that they can never eat their favorite food again. This sets us up for failure and stress. Often times the more we don’t eat a certain forbidden food, the more we want it and ultimately give in (usually in the form of a binge). Wouldn’t it be nice to eat your forbidden food and not feel guilty? So what are your food rules? What is on your forbidden list that you are dreaming about at night? Allow yourself to give into your cravings in small amounts and see how that works for you.


Jicama – My New Favorite Snack

In preparation for my recent cooking class, I’ve been playing around with Jicama. Jicama, is known as a Mexican potato. Although it may resemble a potato, it definitely tastes nothing like it. In its raw form, (and I recommended eating it raw) it tastes more like a radish/apple… very crunchy and a bit sweet. Jicama is loaded with vitamin C, fiber and is low in both calories and carbs. Jicama is usually available year round and can found near the potatoes or in the exotic produce section in the market… definitely ask if you don’t see it. The great news is that it will last on the kitchen counter for weeks. jicama2_m2

How To Use It?

I chopped the jicama and put it into a quinoa salad for my cooking class but my real love affair with it, is using it as a “chip” for dips. It tastes great with hummus, guacamole, bean dip, nut butters – anything. Last night, we went out for Mexican and I was delighted to have an alternative to their oily fried chips. Most Mexican restaurants have jicama somewhere on their menu, so ask if they can bring you a side of jicama sticks for your salsa and guacamole and enjoy!
